Located in north Fulton County, just east of Atlanta, Alpharetta is a city with a population of little over 65,000 people. With a total area of approximately 27 square miles, the city is bordered by Roswell, Milton and John’s creek and is about 26 miles away from Downtown Atlanta, which makes it an excellent option if you need to commute to work every day.
Founded in 1858, Alpharetta stands on an area that once upon a time belonged to the Cherokee Indians, like many other towns in the State of Georgia. Over the course of the past two centuries, the city had its fair share of troubles, like the smallpox epidemic during the Civil War in 1863, but it always found a way to overcome obstacles and succeed. Up until the 1980s, Alpharetta was basically an agrarian town community, but since then, it has blossomed as one of the most prosperous towns in the country.
In the past thirty years, the city has thrived and there has been a surge in population, jumping from 3,000 people in 1980 to over to 65,000 today. Several major companies have branches in Alpharetta, making it a huge employment hub. Some of the biggest employers are Hewlett-Packard, Verizon Wireless, Comcast and Siemens, just to mention a few.
Even though Alpharetta is known mostly for being a technological hub, it also boasts of tourist attractions all over town. There are many points of interest, such as Alpharetta Arboretums, Big Creek Greenway, The Velvet Note and Walk of Memories.
With a humid subtropical climate, Alpharetta has hot, rainy summers and cold, mildly snowy winters. Even though, the city boasts of great quality of life, the cost of living follows the trend of other Georgia cities and it is 27.9% higher than the average when compared to the rest of the United States. However, the family income follows the higher cost of living, with an average annual income of $111,918 per family.
Education-wise, Alpharetta is served by the Fulton County School system, with five elementary schools, like Alpharetta Elementary School and Lake Windward Elementary School; four middle schools, including Amana Academy; and two high schools, including Fulton Science Academy High School. Alpharetta also has several K-12 private schools, such as The Lionheart School and Bridgeway Christian Academy. When it comes to higher education, Alpharetta is home to Georgia State University, Gwinnett Technical College and Reinhardt University.
