Nicknamed the “City of Dreams,” Carrollton is a thriving community of about 26,000 people west of the state of Georgia. The seat of Carroll County is situated some 40 miles west of Atlanta and southwest of Marietta. The city, which is classified part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, has a historical reputation of being a major commercial hub for several counties across both Georgia and Alabama.
The origin of Carrollton is traced to the decision by the justices of the Carroll Inferior Court in 1829 to move the seat of Carroll County, which was chartered three years earlier, to the present location of the city. The town was incorporated in December 1829. Originally, the plan was to name the town “Troupville” in honor of George Troup. But the former governor was not a popular choice with the-then state government, so Carrollton was chosen for Charles Carrollton, the last-living signatory to the Declaration of Independence.
As of 2015, the population of the city was estimated at 26,203, representing an increase of more than 30 percent from the level in the 2000 census. One of the important factors that have contributed to the growth of Carrollton over the years is the ease of access to Interstate 20. U.S. Route 27 goes through the heart of the city, connecting to I-20 in Bremen and extending south to the city of LaGrange.
Carrollton has from its earlier years been known as an important market town. It remains that today playing host to numerous retail chains and restaurants that serve not only the entire county, but also its neighboring areas. But the city’s economy has transformed from agriculture-based to a significantly-diversified one. Construction, power distribution, software, health care and airline are some of the top employers in Carrollton.
The city boasts access to very good educational system. It is served by both the Carroll County School District and Carrollton City School District. The two combine for about a dozen elementary schools as well as half a dozen each of middle schools and high schools. Between them, the school districts have more than 1,000 full-time teachers and 17,000 students. Carrollton is also served by some private schools. It is home to the University of West Georgia and a campus of the West Central Technical College.
There is a lot to do for fun in the city. It has several parks for outdoor recreation. One of these is John Tanner State Park in the western section of the city, offering opportunities for swimming, boating, walking/running and camping. McIntosh Reserve Park also offers a great location camping and horseback riding. You may as well check out the nearby Etowah Indian Mound on the shores of the Etowah River if you are interested in a point of historic interest.
Carrollton’s historic downtown, which is known as Adamson Square, offers great shopping and dining options. It hosts many of the city’s major events, including the annual Mayfest. Near the downtown is the Southeastern Quilt & Textile Museum, which gives you a peek into the history of textile industry in the area.
