About Covington, Georgia:

Covington is a small city in Newton County, Georgia, just 35 miles east of Atlanta. It has a population of just under 15,000 and a geographical area spanning 14 mi.². Covington has a reputation as a warm and friendly community that is also a hotspot for film and television production in the Southeast. Covington has earned the moniker of Hollywood of the south as the home of production such as Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead.

The heart of the community in Covington is its historic and beautiful downtown core which combines the very best of old and new. Covington is known throughout the region as having exceptional cycling with “its broad, tree-lined avenues and abundance of quiet, scenic roadways through pastoral farmland.” To take advantage of the excellent cycling routes that exist in the city, residents can join the Covington Community Bike Ride which is a monthly group bicycle ride that takes place on a Sunday afternoon. The first ride starts in the downtown square and goes for a four and a half mile roll through historic downtown Covington. Those who want an even more challenging ride can follow that with a cycling trek through the scenic Eastside Trail.

 

For those who enjoy being out on the water, Newton County has several options from which to choose. Nearby there are three rivers and three lakes which are perfect for swimmers, paddle borders, kayakers, and fishermen. 

 

Nature lovers will feel right at home in Covington as there are two different wildlife preserves on hand. The Charles Elliott Wildlife Centre is a public fishing and wildlife management area while the Georgia Wildlife Federation is headquartered in Newton County and offers many outdoor activities including nature trails and birdwatching.

 

Covington has an impressive arts and culture scene through Main Street Covington as well as the Southern Heartland Art Gallery. Together these two venues provide stunning visual art exhibits, ballet performances, concerts, a concert series in the park, as well as camps to promote arts education and awareness for youth.

 

Schools in Covington are administered by the Newton County School District. The district consists of 14 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, and a charter school. Some of the highest rated schools in Covington are Newton County Theme School at Ficquett, Eastside High School, Porterdale Elementary School, and Heard-Mixon Elementary School
