Eatonton is a small city of more than 6,000 people in the heart of the Lake Country in Georgia. It is the county seat of Putnam County. Nicknamed the “Dairy Capital of Georgia,” Eatonton has a reputation of being a prominent dairy farming location in the state.

People of Woodland culture are believed to have lived in this area thousands of years ago. The historic Rock Eagle Effigy Mound found in the northern part of the city is believed to have been constructed by the people as far back as 3,000 years ago. In 1807, Eatonton was established as the seat of the newly-created Putnam County. It was named in honor of William Eaton, an officer and diplomat who took part in the First Barbary War. The Town of Eatonton was incorporated in 1809 and was upgraded to the status of a city in 1879.

It has a relatively high number of young residents, at least as of 2000 census when the median age was estimated at 34 years. Eatonton is the birthplace of authors Alice Walker (credited with The Color Purple) and Joel Chandler Harris of the Uncle Remus stories fame. S. Truett Cathy, founder of fast food franchise Chick-fil-A, is also from here.
