About Gainesvill, Georgia:

Gainesville is a midsize city in Hall County Georgia, in the Northeastern section of the state. It’s located approximately 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta and 100 miles southwest of Greenville, South Carolina. With a population of 35,000, Gainesville is the largest of the six Hall County cities. However, as a regional business hub, the population can often balloon to well over 100,000 during regular work hours. Gainesville is home to numerous poultry processing plants and, as such, has become known as the Poultry Capital of the World.

 

Not unlike a lot of Georgia communities, Gainesville has a subtropical climate which features mild winters and hot humid summers.

 

Much of Gainesville’s community identity lies in its geographic proximity to the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains and gorgeous nearby lakes. Outdoor activity and recreation is very much at the heart of the Gainesville way of life. One of the more popular outdoor recreation destinations is Lake Lanier, which was created in 1956 when the Chattahoochee River was dammed near Buford. Over the past 60 years, the lake has drawn people from all over the Southern U.S. for its top-notch boating, fishing, and swimming.

 

Within the city limits, the heart of the community is the downtown square and business district. Here you’ll find a number of boutique and specialty stores as well as several fine restaurants and downtown nightlife spots. Main Street Gainesville is a great example of people coming together to foster community spirit and economic development. This group of local volunteers creates fun events in the downtown district including the Ghost Walk on the Square, the Howl-O-Ween and the Christmas themed Jingle Mingle.

 

Whether you’re a hobbyist looking to stay in shape or a serious athlete looking to train at world-class facilities, Gainesville has the parks and recreation amenities to suit your needs. Clark’s Bridge Park on Lake Lanier was the site for rowing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and is used to this day by local rowing clubs and aspiring rowers. Here you’ll find championship competitions regattas and festivals held throughout the year.

 

Ivey Terrace Park is a gorgeous facility for anyone who wants to be amidst lush greenery for some quiet contemplation. This park has a picnic pavilion, water basin, gazebo, bridge crossover, as well as a multi-use trail that can be used for walking, jogging, hiking, or cycling. Rock Creek Veterans Park is the site of the city’s War Memorial as well as a 300 seat amphitheatre.

 

Gainesville’s residents take great pride in its vibrant arts and culture scene and for good reason. The Arts Council is home to some of the best performing and visual and literary arts in Northeast Georgia. Here you can enjoy a relaxing evening of intimate jazz, taking in one of their movies on the lawn, or enjoy a stunning performance by the symphony. For those who love the visual arts, there is plenty to taken at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, as well as the Brenau University Galleries.

 

Gainesville is a rarity in that its schools are administered through the Gainesville City School District, rather than through a county district. The Gainesville City District has five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. (Gainesville High School) There are multiple private education facilities to choose from within Gainesville including the Riverside Military Academy, and Lakeview Academy.
