Learn More About Jackson, Georgia

Jackson is a significantly diverse city in the state of Georgia. It serves as the county seat of the historic Butts County. The city, which has a small-town ambiance, sits on a total area of about 6.3 square miles, which is almost entirely made up of land. It lies about 46 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta and 9 miles southwest of Georgia's center of population. It is governed by an elected mayor and an elected city council, whose members represent different districts in the community.

Jackson was founded in 1826 on a 303-acre plot of land, which was divided into squares and lots. John D. Swift of Newton County in the state was the first lot buyer in the community. With a major part of it burnt during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War, Jackson remained a struggling small community until railroads arrived in the area in the late 19th century. The arrival of the first train there in May 1882 kicked off an era of growth. By the 20th century, industrial textile mills became the major provider of jobs to the locals. The city was a bedroom community by the 1970s.

Over the years, Jackson has, in a way, been helped by somewhat self-regulating growth. The highest its population has reached was just over 5,000 in 2010. The community was said to be home to an estimated 4,983 as of July 2015. The ambiance of the city makes it attractive to elderly individuals and those who love to live life at a relatively slow pace. Almost 40 percent of the population was 45 years of age or older as of 2000 census. Jackson has highly diverse residents, who belong to a wide variety of racial groups. The major ancestries in this small city include English, Irish, German and Northern European.

Jackson is served by the Butts County School District, which holds pre-school through grade twelve. The school district had more than 184 full-time teachers and 3,370 students as of June 2010. The public schools in the community include Jackson Elementary School, Hampton L. Daughtry Elementary School, Henderson Middle School and Jackson High School.

One of the popular community events in Jackson is the Fine Arts Festival, which is sponsored by the Jackson-Butts County Council for the Arts. The event, held every April around Dempsey Avenue and East Third Street, gives local artists opportunity to showcase their works. People from outside the state of Georgia attend the event, which is free to attend.

Downtown Jackson features pleasant historic homes and you will be amazed by the small town feelings that can be felt as you drive through the area. The Jackson Square offers you opportunity for shopping and dining in family-owned shops and restaurants. You can enjoy nature and the great outdoors in the city with its proximity to the scenic Jackson Lake, High Falls State Park, Indian Springs State Park, and Dauset Trails Nature Center.

Jackson is a progressive city that is rich in history and culture. It offers a remarkable small-town feel as well as an impressive range of big city amenities. The picturesque downtown gives opportunity to enjoy relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
