Cartersville is a city of over 20,000 people positioned a short drive away from Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia. The county seat of Bartow County is located around the northwest rim of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its neighboring communities include Kingston, Adairsville, Cassville, Emerson, Stilesboro and Euharlee.
The city was originally settled by people of English origin who named it Birmingham, possibly after the city of the same name back home. But it was incorporated as the town of Cartersville in 1854, named for Colonel Farish Carter of Milledgeville. The community suffered significant damage during the Civil War, but not so much as the-then county seat of Cassville, which was almost entirely obliterated. Cartersville was made the Bartow County seat in 1867 and incorporated as a city in 1872.
The city is located on Interstate 75, which is the principal north-south route running through the area. The highway running across the eastern boundary of Cartersville has exits in different parts of the community. Stretching parallel to I-75 is the older U.S. Highway 41 which runs to Calhoun and Dalton in the north and Marietta in the south. Other notable routes around Cartersville include U.S. Highway 411, State Route 20, State Route 61 and State Route 113. Little wonder it is considered the gateway of the Atlanta metro area. The nearest major airport is the Atlanta International Airport.
Public schools in the city include Cartersville Elementary School, Cartersville Middle School and Cartersville High School. These are managed by the Cartersville City School System. Private schools located here include Lifesong Montessori, Excel Christian Academy and The Trinity School. Georgia Highlands College, Kennesaw State University and Life University are some of the institutions of higher learning that serve the city.
The local economy relies on tourism, manufacturing and services. Cartersville is also seen as a mini healthcare hub of sort for surrounding locations with the presence of Cartersville Medical Center and The Hope Center. Major employers in the area include Anheuser-Busch, Shaw Industries, Komatsu and Georgia Power.
Cartersville is a notable vacation destination in Georgia offering a lot to see and do. Downtown Cartersville is the place to be when looking to treat your eyes to some historic structures, while exploring a fine selection of dining and shopping options. It is also home to the first Coca-Cola outdoor sign in the world. Alternatively, you could go for a visit to Georgia’s second-largest art museum, the Smithsonian Institution-affiliated Booth Western Art Museum, which boasts the biggest permanent Western art exhibition space in the whole of the U.S.
Popular area attractions also include the Etowah Indian Mounds, Allatoona Lake, Red Top Mountain State Park and Tellus Science Museum, which hosts North Georgia’s first digital planetarium. With several water bodies, including the Etowah River and Lake Allatoona, in its proximity, Cartersville provides opportunities to enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking.
With a good road network and capable school district, Cartersville is a wonderful community to live or work. It provides easy access to downtown Atlanta and many amazing places worth seeing in the metro area.
