Boasting numerous historical structures, Greensboro is a small-sized city in the state of Georgia. The community of just over 3,000, which lies in the watershed of Oconee River southeast of the Oconee National Forest, offers an amazing home-town lifestyle. It is the county seat of Greene County and is located about 5 miles east of Lake Oconee. The city was founded circa 1780 and became the seat of the newly-created Greene County in 1787. Greensboro was incorporated as a town in 1803. Its incorporation as a city was done in 1855.

 

The population of Greensboro was estimated at 3,403 as of 2015. The community has a high proportion of young people as residents. More than 66 percent of the people living here in 2000 were not older than 44 years, with the median age put at around 32 years. The most popular communities in the small city are Reynolds Lake Oconee, Reynolds Plantation and Harbor Club. Reynolds Lake Oconee is a picturesque community along Lake Oconee boasting amazing natural landscape and excellent amenities. Harbor Club on Lake Oconee is an award-winning golf community offering exceptional resort-style living. City residents enjoy convenient access to numerous places around. The community is linked to Union Point in the east and Madison in the west by U.S. Route 278, which passes through its center. State Route 44 leads southwest to Eatonton and State Route 15 extends north to Athens and southeast to Sparta. Also in the proximity of Greensboro is Interstate 20, which leads to Augusta in the east and Atlanta in the west.

 

The Greene County School District provide pre-school to grade-twelve education to residents of Greensboro. It operates elementary schools, middle school, high school and charter school. These include Greensboro Elementary School, Anita White Carson Middle School and Greene County High School. As of June 2010, the school district had 158 full-time teachers and more than 2,280 students.

 

Greensboro is rich in Southern history and traditions. It boasts charming antebellum homes and churches. The Gaol, one of the oldest penal facilities in the state of Georgia, can be found in this community. The city’s downtown area is home to several quaint buildings, some of which serve as gifts stores and antique shops.
