Cute and cozy rental--well maintained
The city of McDonough is located in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, GA. The small town, with a population of a little over 21,000, is part of Henry County and was originally inhabited by the Creek Indian Nation, who ceded the land to the State in the early 1800s. With approximately 12.9 square miles, the town is located in the north-central part of Georgia, at the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountains.
Named after Naval Officer Commodore Thomas McDonough, the town was founded in 1823 around a town square, which still houses the old county courthouse and historic jail. McDonough has a rich history, as it was scene to many Civil War activities, including the last Kilpatrick’s Raid, infantry battles that marked the end of the Atlanta Campaign, and campsites belonging to Confederate General Stephen Dill Lee’s Army Corps.
With intense summers and cold winters, McDonough is a place full of southern traditions, with old-fashioned charms and a relaxed pace. You can enjoy annual events, like the Geranium Festival in the spring, Christmas Extravaganza and learn about history in places like the Nash Farm Battlefield, which is one of the very few Civil War battlefields that remain intact.
The proximity to State capital Atlanta allows residents to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big city, while living in a small, quiet town only 35 minutes away.
McDonough also boasts of excellent housing and education, with an average cost of living of 6.30% lower than the rest of the United States. According to the Georgia Board of Education, the district has 28 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 10 high schools. In McDonough itself, there is a total of 30 schools, public and private, of all levels, including the Academy for Advanced Studies. There are also two universities in town - Gordon State College and Mercer University.
Other than a growing tourism industry, McDonough is also home to one of the offices of Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States and one of the largest corporate employers.
McDonough makes it for an excellent option if you need to commute to Atlanta every day, but still want the peace and quiet of a small town.
