Powder Springs is a small city in Cobb County, Georgia in the greater Atlanta Metropolitan area. Located just 22 miles northeast of Atlanta, the city covers an area of 7.2 square miles and has a population of approximately 15,000. Originally named Springville, the town changed its name to Powder Springs in 1859 on account of the minerals that were found in the local spring water. The 26 minerals in the water turned the surrounding sand black like gunpowder.
Powder Springs has a humid subtropical climate making it a very comfortable city for its residents. It has an average temperature in the winter of 52° and an average temperature of 81° in the warmer months.
Outdoor recreation is a big part of community life in Powder Springs and this is supported through its impressive public parks and trail systems. Powder Springs is on the famous Silver Comet Trail which makes it a popular destination for local cyclists, joggers and rollerbladers. The trail begins 13 miles northwest of Atlanta and runs for 61.5 miles all the way to the Alabama border. The signature public park in the city is Powder Springs Park, located just west of downtown Powder Springs. This park is 25 acres of ball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and pavilions, an outdoor swimming pool, and a passive recreation area with paved trails.
For some good ole fun in the sun, nothing beats a day at the waterpark and in Powder Springs, that means the newly opened Seven Springs' Waterpark. The waterpark offers water slides, a splash pad, and lazy river.
