Sandy Springs is a midsize city in Fulton County Georgia, in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. Located just 16 miles north of the Atlanta downtown core, Sandy Springs covers the geographic area of 38.5 square miles, and boasts a population of just over 100,000. This makes Sandy Springs the sixth largest city in the state of Georgia as well as the second largest in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Sandy Springs has garnered international recognition for its unique approach to operating through a public private partnership (PPP). Through the PPP model, almost half of the city employees are actually employed by a private company. After pioneering this model, other cities in the state have since followed suit.

 

Sandy Springs has a humid subtropical climate which often sees average temperatures during the winter in the mid to low 50s while in the hotter summer months, and routinely gets up in the high 80s and low 90s. Overall Sandy Springs has a very liveable year round climate

 

Sandy Springs has a strong sense of community within its residents and this is evidenced in the community festivals and gatherings that can be found here all throughout the calendar year. Perhaps the biggest and most popular is the Sandy Springs Festival which was first established in 1984 and regularly draws more than 30,000 people annually. This community festival features a juried artist market, civic and business expo, and performances from local and regional bands. Other fun community events that can be found in Sandy Springs include the Chattahoochee River Summer Splash and the Sandy Springs Artapalooza.   

 

With its proximity to the scenic natural beauty of northern Georgia, outdoor recreation is a huge part of community life in Sandy Springs. The Chattahoochee River flows right through Sandy Springs and its 22 miles of shoreline within the city provide an abundance of recreational opportunities for its residents. As well, the city has more than 950 acres of public Parkland in 16 different parks. Some of the more popular parks include Morgan Falls Overlook Park, Big Trees Forest Preserve, and Allen Road Park.

 

For those looking to stay in touch with the region’s historical roots, Heritage Sandy Springs is definitely a place to see. This heritage site is a popular community gathering point and often place house to festivals and concerts. The crown jewel of the site however is a museum which still maintains its 1869 farmhouse design and décor.

 

Schools in Sandy Springs are administered through the Fulton County School District, one of the largest in the state. Amongst the highest rated schools in Sandy Springs are: Riverview International Charter School, Sandy Springs Charter Middle School, Ison Springs Elementary School 

 

Sandy Springs is typical of a lot of Georgia cities located just outside of Atlanta in that it offers the best of small city community spirit while still not being far from the big city amenities.  Its abundant public park space and proximity to the world-famous Chattahoochee River make it an ideal location for any outdoor enthusiast who enjoys fishing boating swimming hunting or just about anything else you could do under the sun.
