Rome, Georgia

Nestled in the middle of seven hills, Rome is a unique major city in the state of Georgia. It is the county seat and the largest city in Floyd County. It is the foremost city of the Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers all areas in the same county. With a population of more than 36,000 people as of 2010, Rome is Georgia’s 19th-largest city and the largest northwest of the state.

This city is located in a setting that would appeal to those who appreciate nature. It lies in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain at the point of convergence of three rivers. Here, the Etowah River and Oostanaula River merged to form the Coosa River. Access to the waterways contributed to Rome emerging as a regional trade hub. The city has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by uniformly-distributed rainfall and a bit high temperatures throughout the year.

The unique geography of the area made it to be named for the ancient Italian capital Rome by early European-American settlers. Before the arrival of the settlers, the area was for long inhabited by the Creek people, who were followed by the Cherokee Indians. A major draw was the strategic location considered to be quite beneficial for facilitating trade. Rome has grown to become a major regional center is areas such as education and health care.

In the earlier years, the economy of the area was driven by King Cotton. The development of cotton plantations in the area led to the emergence of Rome as an major market town. Produce where shipped to downriver markets from here. Today, the city’s economy has become more diverse and relies on several industries, including education, manufacturing, technology and tourism. Rome is home to several well-known medical facilities, including Floyd Medical Center and Redmond Regional Medical Center. Suzuki Manufacturing of America and Pirelli Tire are two of the major companies with presence in the city.

The city’s public school system is administered by the Rome City School District. It has about a dozen elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district has more about 5,400 students and over 300 full-time teachers. Families beyond the city limits are catered to by the Floyd County School District. There are also several private schools. Rome hosts four colleges, including two private institutions.

Rome boasts a vibrant arts community and a unique Southern heritage. It has numerous historic structures, a good number of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Etowah Indian Mounds located on the northern shore of Etowah River and the Rome Clock Tower on the corner of East 5th Avenue and East 2nd Street. Museums in the area include Chieftains Museum or Major Ridge Home, which is dedicated to the history of the Cherokee, and the Martha Berry Museum in honor of Berry College founder.

This naturally beautiful city has not only done an amazing job in preserving its past, but also in charting the course for the future. You are going to like it here if you are a lover of natural beauty. Rome stands apart in terms of its Southern heritage and hospitality and is excellent for both businesses and families.
