Founded in 1733, Savannah is an important and historic city in Georgia. The seat of Chatham County is the oldest city in the state and the first state capital. It is the fifth-largest municipality in Georgia and its third-largest metropolitan area. The city is situated on the Savannah River and boasts the largest port in the state. Savannah was founded on February 12, 1733 when General James Edward Oglethorpe, a representative of King George II to the colonies of America arrived in the area. The city along with the rest of Georgia was made a Royal Colony and it was made the capital of Colonial Georgia. Savannah flourished as seaport throughout the 19th century and was the main target of the March to the Sea by General William T. Sherman. The locals had to surrender to Union troops to prevent their city from being destroyed.

 

The historic city took its name after the nearby Savannah River, whose name is in turn believed to have come from variants of the name of the local Shawnee tribe. The Native American tribe, which had exterminated another to occupy the area, was known as Sawanoki, which means "southerners." But the name has several variants such as Shawano, Savano and Savana. It is also thought that the name of the river might have been derived from the English word "savanna."

 

Savannah has a pleasant humid subtropical climate featuring lengthy, almost tropical summers. Temperatures typically reach freezing just about 24 days in winters.
