Marshbreeze...on Tidal Creek with Marsh View

Darien, Georgia

This house has a screened-in porch, 57 ft. long, looking out over the marshes and a tidal creek with a view of Sapelo Island in the distance. Adjacent to the porch is a 16X18 ft. deck. Sit in our Hot Springs hot tub at night on that deck under a canopy of brilliant stars, undiminished by civilization's lights. There are five sets of french doors that open onto the porch on the southeast side. Open the front door and the french doors, and a gentle breeze blows through the whole house. Yet the whole house is quite private. Our house is adjacent, but away from your viewscape. No other neighbors are visible.

The kitchen overlooks the great room, with a view of the marsh through three sets of French doors. The master bedroom suite is on one side of the house, with the other two bedrooms on the other side. Two bedrooms, with King size beds and high-thread-count linens have French doors that open up to the porch. Or sleep on the bed on the porch, if you like. An office and den and the dining room is on the northwest. They overlook an almost private lagoon, that you can fish in and is full of wildlife and exotic birds, which include wood storks, black-crowned night -herons, white ibis', great egrets and snowy egrets, little blue herons, tri-colored herons, green herons, hooded mergansers and pileated woodpeckers. Porpoises will occasionally forage in the tidal creek right next to the house. The third bedroom, with a queen bed, views the lagoon and a corner of the marsh. We also have an office (with a futon) that faces the lagoon. If you just want to hang out, we have a flat screen HDTV, Blu Ray player, Netflix and Amazon Prime instant stream movies, plus a wonderful sound system.

Two sit-on-top double kayaks and one canoe are on-site, making it easy to get on the tidal creek right from our property. We also have eight bikes (five fat tire adult and three youth of various sizes). If you bring your own, we recommend fat tire bikes if you plan on riding on any of the many sandy roads. However there are many good rides for skinny tire bikes. For motor boats, there is a public launch for a fee (back-in trailer for free) a few miles away. Take your own boat out to Sapelo Island (within sight of the house) and its beautiful beaches, or take the $2 ferry from it's launch a mile away. Drive 25, min. to the Harris Neck Wildlife Reserve and see the finest bird rookeries on the Georgia Coast and probably the whole southeast Atlantic Coast.

Please note that we offer a 10% discount for returning guests.

    A True Paradise!

My family and I had spent two amazing weeks at this beautiful home. It was everything that we had expected. Great kitchen, great living space, and an amazing view. Loved the breezes off the marsh land!! Every room felt like you were outside, but you were actually inside! Never had to leave the bed to see the sunrise. The owners are available if needed and are very helpful. It will be a trip well remembered.

    Awesome week!

Marsh Breeze is a "must" for nature lovers and those hunting a quiet place to relax. The large screened porch provides unlimited opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of the marsh. Anything you may need during your stay is available - from a well stocked kitchen to kayaks, bikes and a hot tub!

We loved our stay at Marshbreeze despite the unexpected heat wave in May! The home was stocked with everything you could need and more. Linens, blankets, towels, condiments, shampoo, Wifi, TV, sound system, etc... I have never stayed anywhere that I have had so much thought put into the comforts of the stay. The place felt like home when you entered and exceeded our expectations. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen provided every appliance you would need. The screened in porch was wonderful and we spent every night listening to the birds, frogs, and relaxing with nature. The kayaks were great with life jackets provided. You have to pay attention to the tides, but that is the marsh life! Bikes are ready and available with safe, quiet, roads to ride. The ferry is within visual distance to Sapelo Island. The place is remote, quiet, and serene, but withing 30 - 45 minutes from the hustle of Savannah, Jekyll, or St. Simon if you so desire. There are excellent restaurants in Darien and Brunswick. Owners live right across the way and were there to greet us and even helped my father carry some items in. They were there for introductions and questions, but provided privacy. It was nice to know they were close when we left, but answered questions before and after checking in. The ramp proved helpful for those that could not do the steps. The hot tub was awesome, despite the 100 degree temps! We had age 23-83 and all found something wonderful to remember from our trip! Thank you...we will be back.

    A solid 3.5 stars

The area was exactly what we were looking for: peace and quiet, so 5 stars for this! The area provides excellent birding, and close enough to explore the hotspots of the surrounding areas. The house needs a little TLC spring cleaning interior and out; the property is beautiful but would benefit from some organization, cleaning, and upkeep. I attempted to use a bike, and picked out the best one I could find, one that wasn't extremely rusted, duct taped, or needing repair, only to have the brake locked/rusted on the front tire. It was good resistance training, so I can also look beyond. Perhaps, bring your own bikes for those seeking longer treks. The photo that is advertised on VRBO as pic 16 out of 17 of the ocean in front was a bit deceiving. Unless a hurricane comes through, I don't believe any guest will ever experience that abundance of water. You will see channels during high tide, and that's about it. So for those hoping to experience an ocean setting, keep searching. The weather was a bit too windy for canoes and kayaks, we tried, but didn't paddle too far. The porch is lovely. The southern food at the local hidden diner gems is amazing. The house is well stocked with everything a guest may need, and suited our needs. But in comparison to other on-water VRBO places we have stayed at, this one will receive a lower rating than previous vacation rentals that had the same or even cheaper rates. Don and Susan are also quiet and I think it is handy to have them close in case a guest would ever need anything. Thank you!

    Marsh Breeze Revives My Soul

I fell in love with this part of coastal Georgia the first time I visited and have returned many times over the past several years. This cottage is my favorite place to stay--not only because of the extensively equipped kitchen, the Tempurpedic beds, the outdoor hot tub, and the full length screened back porch, but also because Don and Susan are such warm and responsive hosts. They live right next door, are leaders in the local arts community, and can point you in the right direction for anything you want to see or do while you are in the area. I'd be happy never to leave the property. There's a lovely two mile walk to Sea Breeze Island that starts right out the front door; the dock to Sapelo Island is about a mile in the other direction; there's a bike path to Darien that starts a little ways down Highway 99; and birders will find plenty to see through their binoculars, especially during winter migration. My favorite place remains the back porch, where I can watch the sun glinting on the water as the tide fills the marsh and recedes again. This place revives my soul.

The house is comfortable with all the necessities of home plus the added luxury of the incredible marsh view. Couldn't have asked for a better vacation from the hustle of everyday life...quiet and calm with family. Plugged or unplugged, this place is perfect for getting away from it all. We enjoyed the kayaks and the ability to put them in the water right outside at high tide. We traversed the tidal marsh and saw dolphins and lots of birds. The house has tons of creature comforts like a fully stocked kitchen... plenty of dishes, pots, accessories, and staples in the pantry to make cooking easy. There are games, books, satellite TV, blue ray player, wifi, hot tub, and more. No need to bring much from home. They even have bathroom supplies in case you forget something. And, the Carson family is right next door if you need anything. The screened porch is the bomb. With plenty of seating and a table to relax around with a meal or a game, you can sit outside in comfort and enjoy family and the view without being "bugged." Such wonderful accommodations are hard to find. We loved it! Come see what you are missing!

Marshbreeze fit the bill for our recent trip to Darien for a family wedding at Hudson Creek Lodge. The natural beauty of the marsh was overwhelming and a joy to experience during our stay. The location is in close proximity to Hudson Creek Lodge, which simplified our frequent trips for wedding activities. Don and Susan's property accommodated all of our needs and even provided a pet friendly environment for our dogs, Sophie and Bo. Thanks for adding to a lovely family wedding memory!! Our time spent on the property was wonderful. We had high expectations because the trip was a gift for my daughter's high school graduation vacation. The property, the home, the view, the accomidations, and the owner all met and exceeded our expectations. The house was beautifully decorated. The rooms and beds were comfortable. The garden tub was delightful after a long day of touring the area. Mornings were especially lovely with beautiful sunrises and the glorious sounds of the birds all enjoyed on the screened in porch with my coffee and a camera. Don was very nice and available for all of our needs but never overbearing or invasive. We will definately come back to this property for another vacation. Thank you Don for a wonderful experience!

This property is amazing. My husband and I take our 2 Belgian Shepherds with us when we go on vacation. We all loved the screened in back porch overlooking a spectacular marsh view. We saw a variety of birds. A birdwatchers delight. My 12 yr old dog especially loved having a ramp to get into the house . Great seafood restaurants nearby. Savannah is a short drive. All kind of water toys and bikes to use. A lovely place to walk our dogs . The owners home is close by but you would never know it. They are available if you need them , and are personable . HarrisNeck refuge is awesome. We saw colonies of nesting wood storks along with herons, egrets. The house has everything you need. This vacation has been our best marsh vacation to date. We plan on returning and exploring the area even further soon. Thank you for sharing your wonderful marsh home with us.

Both were very happy at Marshbreeze and are interested in returning in the future. We took advantage of the canoe, the kayaks, the bikes, the hot tub and the nearby sights. The screened in porch is an amazing place to spend time relaxing. The house is very well stocked with much more than others I have stayed in. We traveled to both St. Simon and Jekyll Islands and the Harris Neck wildlife refugee and although they are all different, they are great places to see. Don was helpful and available for any needs you may have. Thank you for a great stay and hopeful we will make it back to your peaceful retreat.

My family had a one week summer vacation here, and with 5 adults and 3 kids, we all found something we loved about Marsh Breeze. The hosts, Susan and Don were very warm and responsive to any questions we had. The home was fully equipped with enough towels and linens for all of the beds and guests, and the kitchen with all of our cooking and dining needs. The open floor plan kitchen- living room made a great space for 8 of us to be together comfortably. Highlights from our time include: sitting on the back porch at every meal with the marsh breeze (we see why the house is named so!) steadily fanning us, watching herons, osprey, wood storks and many more birds fly over the marsh, star gazing from the hot tub, seeing dolphins swimming in Hudson creek while we were on a bike ride, and kayaking through the marsh at high tide. The Sapelo Ferry Dock is minutes away and we booked a tour on Sapelo Island- we highly recommend this, as the ferry ride and island are beautiful, and the island has a culture and ecosystem all its own that are worth learning about. Less than 15 minutes away is Fort King George, a pre-revolutionary war site with a rich history that explains how the town of Darien came to be. Also 15 minutes away is Turnip Greens, a great store that sells all local/Georgia products and produce. This house and location are a gem, and we are already planning our next visit!

If you want noise, congestion, hype, bars and theater…go to New York City. If you want lapping tides through a marsh as far as the eye can see, birds waking you up, afternoon breezes, luxurious open space accommodations, come to the Marshbreeze in Darien Georgia. The house is perfect in an open way, with a full-length screened in porch, and a lower level porch and hot tub. Perfect for dining out, reading, studying, talking, laughing, all readily accessible from the kitchen and living room. Two of the three bedrooms are just off the porch. Decoration and furnishings are upscale and artistic, and the host and hostess friendly and accommodating. So much to do nearby - islands, bike-rides, kayaking, bird-watching and historic sites. Susan and Don can advise you well on excursions, food, walks, and beaches. This is a magical place to renew and recharge. If you are lucky, you can even take a trapeze class or see a performance at The Marsh Studio next door. Not available in early May, as we plan to make an annual trip to the Marshbreeze house! ~Ellen and Ralph New York City

We have stayed in VRBO properties for many years in many locations, and I can say this stay has been my favorite. The owners have created a wonderful vacation experience for their guests. The house is both attractive and comfortable. It is beautifully decorated as well. The kitchen was fully stocked with most tools a cook could wish for. We made our Thanksgiving dinner comfortably. But hands down the house’s best feature is the wide open view of the low country. The screened-in back porch overlooking the marsh is comfortable for sitting and dining with a view. The deck is great observation spot as well. In the cool evenings, the gas fireplace in the living room was also a welcome feature. The bikes included with the property are a great way of exploring this beautiful corner of Georgia. Kayaks also come with the property. The guestbook is extremely well thought-out and comprehensive. It provides ample information on the features and the area and is written with humor. This is a property to which I would love to return.

Marshbreeze is an amazing place. I have stayed in this area before, but this trip was absolutely fantastic. The marsh is gorgeous and changes with every light. Watching the sunrise over it and listening to the wildlife was truly relaxing. We kayaked each day, and saw many birds, but never that elusive porpoise :) Bikes were also provided, which made it easy to explore the nearby areas. Great access to Sapolo, but also an easy trip to Jekkyl and other areas. Don and Susan's care for this house really shows. Plus, they are really cool people (as are their very friendly neighbors!) The house is very well equipped, clean as a whistle, and has all of the amenities that you would need for a really great, gourmet relaxed trip. The screened porch is a true treat. And, I am pretty sure that the stars are even clearer and larger when viewed from the hot tub. At least I thought so. Thanks again, and hope to return soon.

The home was very clean, comfortable and well supplied. The only problems were very minor . . . ran out of gas for the outdoor grill and the most troubling . . . "sand gnats" that bite. The pests were mainly there when the air was still and seemed to even invade the house through the screened porch and doors. We would still return . . . it's a beautiful view with what we wanted peace and quiet.

We also took a couple of day trips: one to St. Simons and Jekyll and then another to Cumberland Island where we hiked the southern end and saw the wild horses. Locally, we ate at Mudcat Charlie's several times - they have great steamed shrimp. We also liked B & J's - the buffet and their seafood both are excellent! Thank you, Don and Susan, for your hospitality and your lovely home! We hope to be back soon!

I find it pretty hard to write a review, and pat myself on the back for finding such an INCREDIBLE place to celebrate our anniversary, but I'm going to try hard. First of all, by just looking at the pictures you'll see that it is a beautiful place, but NOTHING prepaired us for the sheer warmth of the house as well as the owners,I had looked for over a year for the perfect place for our anniversary, and i sure found it without queston....The house, itself, is laid out for a couple or extened family. Lots of nooks and crannys to "hide away,as well as that awesome porch out back. That was our eating nook-overlooking the marsh, and watching all the birds. And dont think because Darien is small that theres nothing to do. We spent a day in Darien, just rambling around the seafront, and enjoying a good meal at SKIPPERS. Fresh seafood is on the road behind the resturant, where we got our shrimp. We also took a day trip to St. Marys, Ga.,where they had a Submarine Museum that my husband, being a former submarier, really enjoyed, Ate a light lunch at the RIVERVIEW CAFE,overlooking the water, that was nice. Also, crossed over into Florida, and went to Amelia Island and the tiny town of Fernandina Beach. The town is very historical-lots of old building,Great assortment of art, jewelry, clothes etc,and some of the friendliest people we've ever met. Some of our highlights were just the house itself, and HARRIS NECK REFUGE(Dont miss this) Great birding, and wildlife.and good hiking trails all thru the reserve. But our favorite thing was eating at OLD SCHOOL DINER. It's on the same road leading into Harris Neck, and we enjoyed it so much that we ate there twice!! We,actually, went there for our anniversary, and we could not have been taken better care of. From tucking us in a quiet room by ourselves ,to putting on an Etta James CD for our "mood" music,we couldnt have been treated with more kindness.Chef Jerome and his wife,'Retta and their staff provide an experiece that TRULY represent all I love about the south. So a wonderful house, great nights in the hot tub,and seafood cooked to prefection.....Thank you Don and Susan, for making this all possible......Gloria and John

My wife and I recently spent a month at this wonderful house on the marsh in coastal Georgia. It was the perfect escape from our northeast winter. The house has all the amenities one could want. The setting was magical.I would watch the sunrise and look out at all the life in the marsh from the 57 foot screened porch. At night a relaxing soak in the hot tub with the stars overhead bigger and brighter than I had ever seen. There are many things to see and do during the day.The owners have put together a guide book with points of historical and natural interest. We loved it and hope to return.

My family enjoyed our long weekend at Marshbreeze. The house was comfortable, and the porch overlooking the marsh was fantastic. We spent a large majority of our time sitting out there under the fans and watching the tides change the view. We enjoyed kayaking on the lagoon with our children (some of whom Kayaked for the first time). We also enjoyed biking around the area. Don was most helpful in answering all of my questions before we arrived, and the home was exactly as described--comfortable and inviting. We had a great time and loved being able to bring our dog along--he also loved the property.

The perfect rental for our family reunion. Stunning views of the marsh and distant islands from the screened-in porch. This beautifully designed, clean, and well-equipped house completely lives up to its online description, and provides a comfortable home base for relaxation and exploration of the southern Georgia coast. We loved using the bikes, and would have used the canoe and kayaks if we'd had a longer visit. The owners were helpful and generous in accommodating our specific needs. We feel very fortunate to have stayed at Marshbreeze!

A perfect home and location. Very private, with expansive views. The home was fantastic. Clean, comfortable and beautifully done. Kitchen included lots of accessories and spices. Owners easily available with answers to all questions and local advice. We used bikes and kayaks (when tides cooperative). Beautiful private lagoon on property with lots of waterfowl to see- we kayaked there, too. Good restaurants, freshly caught seafood and food shopping within 7-10 miles. Sapelo Island ferry within minutes of rental. A wonderful rental. Highly recommended!

Don & Susan: Just a note to express our thanks for sharing your lovely home with us. We had an incredible week and left yesterday with hearts renewed and spirits refreshed. Know there were plenty of things to do and/or see, but other than a trip to Harris Neck Refuge, we found it difficult to make ourselves leave the peace, solitude and amazing views at Marshbreeze. Morning coffee on the porch was heavenly. Birdlife in abundance; seeing woodstorks daily was an unexpected treat. Evenings soaking in the hot tub under an amazing canopy of stars was wonderous. The house overall was very comfortable and welcoming. Having some great local seafood while there was just a bonus. We've stayed in "marsh homes" from Virginia to Florida (we LOVE the low country) and this was probably our best experience ever. You could not have been more accommodating, gracious and responsive. Again, thank you so much. Some wonderful memories were created that we will long treasure.

This property was more than description. it is hard to describe the beautiful breezes, peacefulness, sound of wind going thru the grasses and the bird songs and calls, in a picture. the photos are accurate. the pleasing art and photography in the home are extra delights. everything was very clean and well maintained, though it did take me a while to figure out how to work the coffepot. Kitchen was outfitted with everything. The owners were very helpful in answering any questions, and left detailed instructions on any mechanics involved in a notebook. They also left much information on the area and activities in the area. We have visit the area before, but there is always something different to do. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Skippers Fish Camp in Darien, and just a short drive takes you to wholesale, retail seafood at Oceans Bounty with pleasant owners, and shrimp fresh off the boat. We also went to the wildlife refuge, cant remember name, and did some bird watching. There is much to do in the area but we had a hard time leaving the house because everything was so comfortable and beautiful and peaceful. We have enjoyed sightseeing and the ferry to Sapelo, Hofwyl plantation, trips to Savanna from here. We also have gone to Shellmans bluff, etc, etc. in the past and we love the tidal basin and all that it offers. Highly recommend this as a vacation getaway to relax and stargaze. Every sunrise was different and exciting on the basin with mists and pink skies. Enjoy, enjoy.

Three couples converged from different locations in the south for a three-night getaway and we were not disappointed. The property is very private with a long view of the surrounding marsh and Georgia lowlands. It is spacious, with high ceilings, a screened deck, very adequate kitchen and good beds. One especially nice feature is that the owners have installed numerous dimmers so that guests can select the light level of their choosing. The fireplace is gas and a great addition to a chilly night, as is the hottub. Bicycles and kayaks are downstairs. The house cat takes awhile to warm up to you but will avoid you if you're not a cat person. This brings up the only curiosity about the place, which is that the owners live there except when guests arrive. This did not present a problem for us, but I mention it as possibly being noteworthy for others. Owners Don and Susan have decorated their home with lively art, yet it is not over-decorated. They could not have been more cooperative and we happily recommend their abode for your consideration.

What a perfect location for anyone seeking a quiet, relaxing vacation. I thought Marshbreeze was even nicer than the website portrays. I loved reading on the porch with the smell of salt water in the air. The view off the deck is lovely, with no neighbors in sight - just landscape. I honestly could have stayed at the house all week and just relaxed. We did enjoy day trips to Sapelo Island, Jekyll Island, Harris Neck Bird Refuge, Savannah, kayaking from the yard at high tide, and bike riding. My husband and I loved the master bed and bath which leads right out to the porch and deck. There is a hot tub to enjoy while you gaze at the stars on a clear night.

Waking completely rested to the glow of sunrise over the golden saltmarshes and through the palms -blissful. What to do today? Take the ferry tour to Sapelo Island for a fun filled bus ride with Yvonne, walk along the trails at Harris Neck Natural Wildlife Refuge to check out the Ibis, Wood Storks, Herons, Turkeys, Gators and Turtles, Egrets, etc., eating at Chef Jerome's Old School Diner, Skippers, and the buffet at BJ's, bicycling the trails and roads recommended by Don and Susan, a trip to Jekyll Island and the fine book store, etc. The best was the personal invitations of several of Darien's residents to attend the Scottish Block Party with entertainment by a Scottish Rock and Roll band (Uncle Hamish and the Hooligans), the locals including Mike from the Wine/Cheese/Meat shop, and the bats that emerge in the evening from an old brick building downtown. At day's end the hot tub soak ensured another fine rest in the comfortable king size bed. For a week waking at home I was swept away to the Marshbreeze mornings; what a shock to open my eyes to snow. Thank you for the use of your grand home and community.

What a fabulous house and surrounding property. We were pleased to escape from the snowy north to Don and Susan's Marshbreeze for Christmas and New Year 2010/2011. The place has a great karma and we particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet midst the splendid backdrop provided by the Salt Marsh. Despite the extra cold snap we did have some days when it was warm enough to throw open the windows at the front of the house and the french doors leading to the covered and enclosed deck at the rear and enjoy the warm fresh breezes through the whole house. The 'local finds' for us were the Waterfront Wine and Gourmet store in Darien with its excellent and eclectic selection of wines and buying shrimp and other fresh seafood straight of the boats at 'Oceans Bounty' a stones throw away to the north on SR99. Don't be discouraged by the workmanlike appearance of the place, like everyone else around thereabouts, they are very welcoming and helpful. Don was very kind and pointed us to a great place nearby to exercise our dogs and ourselves. We were sad to have to leave. It was a great holiday.

Our family was in much need of a quiet retreat and Marshbreeze was everything we had hoped for and even more. We felt like we were in our own little world and enjoyed the breezes coming through the open doors all day and most nights too. It was close enough to local attractions so there was very little effort in traveling anywhere but was completely secluded once we pulled in the driveway. We watched the sunset every night on the front porch and saw multiple shooting stars while out on the back deck. Our children raced around catching fiddler crabs and our dog lounged on the porch under the fans. All of us ventured out at high tide to explore the marsh on the kayaks. We are already looking at our calendar for a return trip. Thanks for offering such a great home!!

We had a great time. The setting for Marshbreeze is beautiful and the house met our needs perfectly. For a family of five the rental of a home makes a lot of sense, compared to a hotel room, since there is a much more room to spread out and we were able to save a fair amount on meals since we could cook in the well-equipped kitchen. After a busy day out visiting the large variety of points of interest in the area it was nice to come back to a relaxing retreat.

We had a wonderful time at your beautiful home on the marsh. My husband, his sister, her husband, and I all returned relaxed and rejuvenated. We opened the French doors each morning and enjoyed the breezes. The screened porch was amazing – a great place to read and watch the changing tides. We ate all of our meals out there – local fresh shrimp and soft-shelled crabs. Nature renews me and your quiet home on the marsh was just what I needed. We took the canoe out on the marsh at high tide, explored the pond with the flat-bottomed boat, and rode the bikes. The wheel-chair ramp and easy accessibility off the porch into the bedrooms and open kitchen/living areas was a great asset for our family – one that we require but are often unable to find in a vacation home. We stopped by to visit my friends at the Altamaha Riverkeeper in Darien and were pleased to learn that you are supporters. I’d encourage anyone who loves the natural beauty of this area to support this organization – they work hard to be sure that this area remains a very special place. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful home. We hope to have an opportunity to return again.

Waking to the marsh breeze coming through the open French doors, accompanied by a chorus of birds, peacefulness seeped into our bones. The tide changed subtly. Our bedroom, isolated enough to be secluded, opened to the porch which runs the length of the house. The ample and open kitchen and living room also opens its many French doors onto the same porch, so as two couples, we could gather or separate and always be in touch with the marsh as our focus. Most quiet mornings, we took care of business, read, watched the marsh, the birds, the sky, then adventured into the many possible preserves and activities. One day we went to Harris' Neck Preserve biking alone through beautiful open roads, and long ponds seeing flocks of wood storks, anhingas and multicolored herons. We were never far from a dense and luxurious nature which fed our spirit. Next day we kayaked in the marsh, catching the tide in time to paddle through a gentle rain…and find our way back through the labyrinth of creeks. We spent one day on Jekell Island, biking, swimming, and walking the beautiful beach. We reserved Sapalo Island, ferry a 5 minute bike ride away, and St. Simon's for another trip, as we ran out of time. The little town of Darien gave the history and context of the place. A wonderful restaurant, Pelican Point, on the water was a treat when we didn't want to prepare dinner. The live oaks and Spanish moss are unforgettable. The history and presence of the long pines, the sense of continuity of life and nature make this a perfect spot for couples, families, and friends to find a special part of themselves, and of Georgia. We never needed the air conditioning, but did need the cozy gas fire one night. While the setting alone would make this a wonderful place, the house itself is beautiful, new, with elegant touches. It has both simplicity, charm and creature comforts, ice-machine, dishwasher, Jacuzzi, wifi. The artistic nature of the owners make it even more special. There are four bikes available, and nearby kayaks for those so inclined. This is a five-star recommendation!

We stayed at this house from March 16-22, 2008. The property was perfect for a grandmother, uncle, mother and 10 year old girl fleeing the cold in Wisconsin. One of our favorite things about the house was the long, wide screened porch overlooking the saltmarsh, where we had our coffee and watched the sun come up each morning. A couple of evenings were cool, and we enjoyed the fireplace with a glass of wine. We appreciated the quiet and privacy (although the neighboring Blue Heron B&B was very nice and the owner invited us over for wine and cheese) as we were worried about spring breakers in the beachier towns. The birder in our group got up and birded the lagoon every day and saw hooded mergansers, lots of wood storks, night herons, woodpeckers, and warblers. We used the house as a base to explore Jekyll Island (great beaches, fiddler crabs, oysters, sea turtle center, nature center with sea kayaks available), Sapelo Island (reserve a seat on the ferry, only a 3 minute drive away down Landing road, tour the Reynolds mansion and see the lighthouse and tabby ruins), the Okefenokee swamp (about 2 hr drive, the swamp park has a boat ride, train ride and nature show) and the Harris Neck wildlife refuge (our favorite, the rookery was rich with life: wood storks, egrets, moorhens and coots, ducks, many kinds of herons and reptiles including alligators at Woody Pond). It was breezy during our stay, which helped to keep the "sand gnats" down. In calm weather these little biting flies were abundant and made us especially glad for the large screened porch. Thanks Don.

We had a great time, it was so great to have all the amenities you would not find in a hotel. I especially liked the very thick cutting board as we cooked alot! Have been looking for one ever since! We never kept track of the tides which if you are interested in kayaking you should do or you may miss your window for going out on the water. We never did go but honestly never cared. We loved sitting on the porch and using the binoculars to see all the wildlife. Don the owner was very accommodating and helped with whatever we needed. We took walks and loved looking in the ponds for the baby alligators although I was a little too scared to let our dogs in. It was fun to see the baby crabs all the time and having the access to the porch from the master bedroom was very cool and gave you some privacy too. The local seafood shrimp was very yummy and we also ate in town once which was good for the money. It's not a big town but we were looking to get away so it's what we expected. I do wish I had a drink at the wine bar in town behind the antique shop and wish I had went. We did head down to the landing where you can take a boat in. If we had a boat, that would have been a nice place to take it and it was virtually quiet with no people there. All in all we'd go again and after the first two days it took to wind down, the rest was very nice and felt like we truly had a vacation. Thanks Don and Susan for a great time!
