Kennesaw, Georgia

 

The city of Kennesaw is located in Cobb County, Georgia. It is bordered by Acworth to the northwest and has Kennesaw Mountain to its southeast. With a population of over 30,000, it is the 28th-largest in the state. The city, which was founded in 1887, has a humid subtropical climate and is part of the greater Atlanta metro area. It is made up of 12 neighborhoods.

 

The history of Kennesaw revolves around the Western and Atlantic Railroad. It grew as shanties as the railroad was being constructed in the late 1830s. These shanties provided accommodation for workers helping on the project. These contributed to the area being named the “Big Shanty.” Its present name was inspired by the nearby Kennesaw Mountain, which boasts the highest peak in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name “Kennesaw” was derived from the Cherokee term “gah-nee-sah,” which is translated as a burial ground or cemetery.

 

Kennesaw had more than 11,000 households as of 2010 census, with a significant portion of the population aged 24 years or younger. The city had 12,328 housing units for an average density of about 397 per square kilometer. Real estate in the area ranks among the most preferred in Georgia and this is reflected in home prices. For years, Kennesaw had one of the lowest crime rates both in the state and nation. Violent crime rates were around 60 percent less than national and state rates in 2001. Reduction in crimes was reported in the period 1999 to 2011. However, a slight hike was observed in the five years through 2008, with this attributed to a big jump in population at a rate well above both the state and national rates.

 

Education level of city residents is considered significantly higher than the national average of all cities. About 38 percent of adults possess at least a Bachelor’s degree. Kennesaw has multiple elementary, middle and high schools (both public and private), including Pine Mountain, Harrison High School, Sunbrook Academy and Kennesaw Charter Science & Math Academy. Kennesaw State University is also situated in the proximity of the city.

 

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, which can be found downtown, is one of the major local attractions in the city. It houses the locomotive The General of the Great Locomotive Chase fame.

 

Kennesaw boasts one of the highest numbers of educated people in country and is a great city for professional job seekers. It is also ideal for families, being rated among the “10 best towns for families” by Family Circle magazine in 2007. The city is an excellent choice for younger people as well.
