LaGrange, Georgia

 

Located in the west central part of the state of Georgia, LaGrange is a city of about 30,000 and county seat of Troup County. It covers an area of about 112 miles, of which around 111 miles is land. This principal city of Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area is perfect for both families and businesses.

 

The LaGrange area was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians. It was settled in the early 19th century after it was ceded by the locals. The city was named for the country estate of General Marquis de La Fayette near Paris. The French and American hero, who visited the state of Georgia several times, had observed to Governor Troup on one of his visits that the local landscape reminded him of his estate back in France. This somewhat influenced the townspeople to opt for LaGrange as their town’s name. The city was incorporated in 1828.

The enterprise city, the number of whose inhabitants with at least a Bachelor’s degree is around the national average, has a lot to attract businesses. Little wonder LaGrange bills itself as “a place where business gets done.” It was the founding place for the world’s largest carpet tile manufacturer, Interface, which still maintains significant presence there. The city also has the North American headquarters of the forestry division of Caterpillar.

 

One of the selling points of LaGrange is its location in the vicinity of West Point Lake, a major tourist attraction in the area. The 26,000-acre lake with a shoreline extending some 500 miles is a great destination for residents and visitors to enjoy bass fishing and exciting water sports.

 

The city is home to Bellevue, the historic home of Senator Benjamin Harvey Hill, which is a classic example of awesome Greek Revival architecture. LaGrange College, Georgia’s oldest private college, is also located there.
