Locust Grove, Georgia
Named for a picturesque grove of locust trees that could be noticed across the area, Locust Grove is a small city in Henry County in the state of Georgia. This community, which has witnessed significant growth in population over the past couple of decades, is located at the southeastern fringe of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its postal address is shared by Luella and some other unincorporated areas as well as several rural communities in surrounding locations.
Locust Grove grew as an important distribution center for farm products, such as cotton and peaches. It had cotton gins and several warehouse in the earlier years. The first store in the community was erected on Main Street in 1870. It was incorporated in 1893, with its limits at the time stretching out about a quarter of a mile in all directions from the heart of the town, depicted by the train depot. Locust Grove was reincorporated in 1922.
From total residents of 255 in 1890, the total population of this city has grown to almost 6,000. The number of those living here increased almost four times in the 20-year period from 1990 to 2010 as more families and businesses move to the area. Locust Grove boasts of a young population, with the median age of residents put at about 32 years in 2000. It has actively tried to retain its hometown feel and great Southern hospitality.
The most popular communities in this city include Heron Bay, Pristine Forest, Eagle’s Brooke, and Wyckliffe. Heron Bay is home to the Heron Bay Golf and Country Club, while Eagle’s Brooke lies in the proximity of Mallards Landing Airport.
Locust Grove lies along Interstate 75, south of Atlanta. It offers access to decent transportation arrangement, particularly rail transport. More than 40 trains are said to pass through the city on daily basis, connecting the Port of Savannah to Atlanta. Major highways here also include U.S Highway 23, Georgia State Route 23, Georgia State Route 42, and Georgia State Route 401.
The area is home to about a dozen public schools where kids can acquire knowledge to be useful to themselves and the society. These include Locust Grove Elementary School, New Hope Elementary School, Luella Elementary School, Locust Grove Middle School, Ola Middle School, and Locust Grove High School.
Locust Grove boasts many attractions that would delight both visitors and residents. There is something for people of virtually all ages. Are you awed by trains? The Locust Grove Train Watching Platform, which features many seats and picnic tables as well as lighting, gives you opportunity to watch numerous trains course through the Historic Downtown – it is also the home of the city’s Farmers’ Market. The non-profit animal preserve Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary allows you watch more than 1,500 rescued animals, including the supposed only cohabiting lion, bear and tiger in the world.
Considering its rather small size, Locust Grove is a community that offers families, especially the younger ones, a great place to call home. The number of businesses here is also growing, with Tanger Outlet Center playing host to many of these, including popular brands like Nike, Old Navy and Banana Republic.
