This area was originally an Indian settlement known as Thomoccogan. Founded in 1800, Jefferson was named for former President Thomas Jefferson. It was incorporated as a town in 1806, the same year it took over from Clarkesboro as the seat of Jackson County. But the name hasn’t always been Jefferson. It was incorporated as a town under the name Jeffersonville, which was later changed to Jeffersonton. The present shorter version was adopted on June 30, 1824. The City of Jefferson was incorporated in 1896.
In the four decades from 1930, the population of the city swung between rises and declines. However, it has experienced steady rise since the 1980 census, growing almost 60 percent between 2000 and 2006. There were a total of 9,432 people here as of 2010, but a 2015 estimate showed 10,195 people lived in Jefferson.

This may also be taken as a sign of growing local economy. Traditions of Braselton is arguably the most sought-after community in Jefferson. It is home to the Traditions of Braselton Golf Course, which has lush, gently rolling hills as backdrop.
