Athens is a midsize city in Clark County Georgia, located in the north eastern part of the state. With a population of just over 193,000, Athens is the sixth largest city in Georgia. The cultural crown jewel of Athens Georgia is the Georgia Museum of Art, the official state museum of art since 1982. The museum offers something for people of all ages as well as free admission to the public for all exhibitions.

 

Another popular draw is the State Botanical Garden of Georgia which covers 313 acres and operated by the University of Georgia. The garden contains 11 different botanical and horticultural collections including a delilah garden, a heritage garden, and international garden, and a native azalea collection, just to name a few.

 

Being a major American college town, it should come as no surprise that Athens is known throughout the region for it’s amazing music scene. People flock to world-famous venues like the 40 W club and the Georgia theatre to take in the hottest up-and-coming musical acts

 

Schools in Athens are administered by the Clark County School District and features 14 elementary schools, for middle schools, and three high schools. Amongst the top schools in Athens are: Chase Street Elementary School, Barrow Elementary School, Clark Middle School, and South Jackson Elementary School.

 

It’s possible Athens Georgia could be one of America’s more underrated cities. It’s a classic great little city that you’ve probably never heard of. In 2016, it was named one of the Top 17 Most Affordable Cities by mint.com. In 2015 it was ranked as one of the best college football towns as well as one of Forbes 25 best places to retire.
