Background on Augusta, Georgia
Augusta is in Augusta – Richmond County and is a consolidated city that is on the Central Eastern border of the state of Georgia. Augusta is Georgia’s second largest city; Atlanta being the largest. According to the United States Census Bureau, Augusta is approximately 306 square miles in size and about 4 miles of that is water. If you were to look on a map you would see that Augusta is located on the Georgia/South Carolina border which is around 150 miles East of Atlanta and approximately 70 miles West of Columbia County. As of 2017 the estimated population here was close to 200,000. This densely populated portion of Georgia has a nickname which is “The Garden City.” The state motto is “We Feel Good.”

Climate in Augusta
The climate here in Augusta is humid subtropical which means the summers tend to be hot and often muggy whereas the winters tend to be short but cold. The hottest part of the year here goes from the end of May until mid-September when the daily average high is 85 degrees. The low for this time of year is in the mid to low 70’s. The cooler part of the year here is from the end of November until the end of February when the daily average high is a comfortable 64 degrees. The low for this time of year is around 38 degrees. Here in Augusta the temperature rarely goes below 25 degrees or above 100.

Historic Districts
The Downtown portion of Augusta is known as the historic district. There are eight different districts for you to explore when canvassing the Downtown portion of Augusta. There is the Bethlehem Historic District, Sands Hill Historic District, Summerville Historic District, Broad Street Historic District, Greene Street Historic District, Laney-Walker North Historic District, Harrisburg-West End Historic District and Pinched Gut Historic District. Each of these districts has something different to offer and many people usually pick one or two districts and make a day out of exploring them. This is a great family activity especially if you want to teach your children about the pre-Civil War era.

Economy Here in Augusta
The economy here in Augusta is booming to say the least. The Medical District of Augusta alone employs more than 25,000 people. Augusta University, which is the state’s only public health sciences graduate university employs more that 7,000 individuals. There are also several major companies that are either headquartered here or have some sort of distribution center or facility here. T-Mobile, Solo Cup Company, John Deere, Kellogg’s and the Delta Air Lines baggage call center are just a few of the larger, more recognizable names found here. Besides them there are a few other major employers worth mentioning and they are Fort Gordon and the Richmond County School System. Fort Gordon employs around 20,000 people and the Richmond County School System employs almost 4,500 people.

Education in Augusta
The above-mentioned Richmond County School System serves the youth of Augusta. Since Augusta is so large and has such a huge population there is an extensive number of schools within this district. There are 36 elementary schools as well as 10 middle schools and 9 high schools. When it comes to private schools, Augusta has an abundant amount of those, 15 to be exact but a few of them fall in the neighboring town of Martinez but still serve students residing in Augusta.

Points of Interest in Augusta
The Augusta Canal – This canal is a historic landmark and is known for its recreational activities. Here you can enjoy kayaking and paddling as well as guided tours on electric tour boats. There is a 7 mile long towpath as well as a few other trails which allow for bike riding. There is the River Levee Trail and the Third Level Trail. If you love being outdoors, you will love this area of Augusta!

Augusta Riverwalk – Here at the Riverwalk you can enjoy beautiful views of the water while taking a stroll or check out “The Saturday Market.” This market is the place to be on a Saturday morning here in Augusta. Here you will find things like freshly baked goods, regional produce as well as locally roasted coffee for you to sample and purchase. This weekly event gives a small town feel to a somewhat large community. When you are done at “The Saturday Market” you can head over to the Morris Museum of Art or the Augusta Museum of History to view exhibits and learn more about the rich history here in Augusta! They are located within close proximity to the Riverwalk.
