Eatonton, Georgia

Eatonton is a small city of more than 6,000 people in the heart of the Lake Country in Georgia. It is the county seat of Putnam County. The city covers a total area of about 21 square miles, of which less than 1 percent is made up of water. It offers a great setting for families and supportive location for businesses. Nicknamed the “Dairy Capital of Georgia,” Eatonton has a reputation of being a prominent dairy farming location in the state.

People of Woodland culture are believed to have lived in this area thousands of years ago. The historic Rock Eagle Effigy Mound found in the northern part of the city is believed to have been constructed by the people as far back as 3,000 years ago. In 1807, Eatonton was established as the seat of the newly-created Putnam County. It was named in honor of William Eaton, an officer and diplomat who took part in the First Barbary War. The Town of Eatonton was incorporated in 1809 and was upgraded to the status of a city in 1879.

This city has a population of over 6,000 – precisely, 6,520 according to 2015 census estimate. It has a relatively high number of young residents, at least as of 2000 census when the median age was estimated at 34 years. Eatonton is the birthplace of authors Alice Walker (credited with The Color Purple) and Joel Chandler Harris of the Uncle Remus stories fame. S. Truett Cathy, founder of fast food franchise Chick-fil-A, is also from here. Author Henry Grady Weaver and two-time Olympic gold medalist Vincent Hancock are also among the notable people from the city.

Public education is provided to Eatonton residents by the Putnam Country School District. The public school district, which has about 2,500 students and more than 160 full-time teachers, holds Headstart through grade twelve. Gatewood Schools (private Christian school) also provides education in grades K3-12. Eatonton is served by Georgia College & State University and Central Georgia Technical College for higher education.

With its location between Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, the city offers opportunities to enjoy superb water-related activities, including swimming, water-skiing, and camping. You can also enjoy golfing in the area. Places of interest around include the Lockerly Arboretum, A.H. Stephens Memorial State Park and State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

Eatonton is noted for its tradition of tales. So you shouldn't be overly surprised if you heard a story that sounds too good to be true sometimes. The city hosts a statue of the Br'er or Brer Rabbit, a central character renowned for its trickery in the Uncle Remus' stories of the Southern U.S. You may learn more about this character and more at the Uncle Remus Museum.

Eatonton is a great city for families when you consider its small town appeal. The community, which is replete with antebellum homes, offers you a great place to enjoy Southern hospitality. It also boasts of great boutique shopping experience and, perhaps, all you will need for amazing leisure and recreation.
